Home Maintenance Tips for Fall

Fall home maintenance tips for the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont

Even though we hate to admit it, the subtle changes that hint about fall have begun. The cool mornings, fairs, even a few leaves have started to change. With these simple tips you can start preparing your home for fall and winter.

Clean out your gutters of any debris like leaves and sticks. Once the leaves really start to fall you will be happy to have half the work. Make sure that they are still fastened securely as well.

While you have the ladder out, check your roof for any wear or damaged areas with loose or missing shingles, check vent and chimney seals to make sure there wont be any leaks.

Weed out the gardens and plan to mulch them with the fallen leaves you rake up later in the season. Look over any trees or bushes you may have and make a mental note of which will need pruning later on.

Check you calking and weather stripping around your windows and doors.

Prepare for routine maintenance on your lawn and garden equipment. What type of oil will you need, containers to dispose of old gas, and purchase your new spark plugs so that when it is time to put them away for the winter you are prepared.

Plan where you will store your outdoor furniture once it becomes to cold to sit outside. This is also a good time to check the stores for end of season clearance items if your planning to get new outdoor furniture for next year.

Schedule your furnace and chimney maintenance. As cold weather approaches appointments will be harder to come by.
