10 Ways to Live Large in a (Very) Small Space

10 tips on how to live large in a very small space

Depending on the area you live in, the square footage you can afford, and ultimately the house you choose to reside will determine how large of a space you have to make yourself a home. Although having a small home can seem tight and possibly cut up, the square footage doesn't have to define the way you live within the space you own.

Make More of Less
When space is limited, you have to be creative and search for ways to make a house work with the space you do have. It can sometimes be hard to decorate small spaces, but it can lead to a very functional design concept. Whether it is a city apartment or a quaint log cabin in the woods, it is not about the space one has, but how well it is used.

Armoire Antidote
If your real estate is confined, but you need to figure out a way to still incorporate an office, a Armoire is the solution. This can be a beautiful, yet functional option that can hold everything essential to the work you need to get done.

On the Double
Double duty furniture can be a savior for those living in a close quarters set up. One great way to expand the space is by using a wooden chest at the end on a bed. It can serve as a bench as well as a place to store your items.

Look Up
Once the floor area of a room is no longer vacant, don't be afraid to look for even more surfaces to put items. The walls can be an overlooked area of premium space to hold your valuables. Choose shelving that can start at 18 inches below the ceiling and just go down from there. You will be amazed by the amount of floor space you can free up once some of your items are paced on the shelves.

Stay in the Clear
A great way to trick the eye into thinking you have more space is by using clear furniture. By using clear or Lucite pieces you can give the room a brighter, cleaner, and more visually open feel. Traditional wood pieces can sometimes make an already limited space feel even smaller.

On the Ledge
Small bathrooms usually comes with the territory of a smaller house. If your bathroom feels cramp and is in need of storage space, mounting a shelf above the sink can be a great solution. With this shelf it can hold your everyday items such as soap, toothbrush, lotion, etc. For the rest of your items, try storing your them in a decorative basket or out of sight in a closet.

Keep It Light
Using a light color pallet can give you the edge you need to give off the illusion of a bigger and more open floor plan. Often people think that light colors have to be chosen from a pastel selection, but as long as you grab from lighter shades for each section of a room it can be a great way to make your space feel airy and open.

Hang It
Kitchens can be an area of the house that can quickly become stuffed with everything someone needs to make their home cooked dinners. Save some space by utilizing wall mounts for pot and pans. This will get these items off the counters and out of the cupboards to free up precious space.

Mirror Illusions
This has got to be one of the most favorite tricks to make a room appear more spacious. Using a mirror against the side or corner of the walls is not only decorative, but it can instantly create the appearance of a much larger room.

Divide and Conquer
A bookshelf can do wonders for a house. Not only can it be the ultimate storage for books, artwork, and magazines, but it can also be a great divider to separate rooms of a smaller house. With this trick you can have two rooms for the price of one by making the whole area feel more private and cozy.

Embrace the Light
Although privacy is never something one should have to sacrifice when living in their own home, cherishing the light one does receive inside their small house can do wonders for how the space feels. Instead of using black out curtains to avoid onlookers, use curtains that soften the light from outside to allow natural light to warm up a space. These curtain can be equally effective to ensure privacy and the proper lighting within a room.
