Five Home Improvement Trends To Watch In 2019

A look at 5 of the top home improvements predicted to influence how home owners choose to remodel their homes in the next year.

Home Improvement Trends

Here are some home improvement trends to pay close attention to in 2019. The industry experts from global building product manufacturers, national retail chains, and allied organizations believe these are the key takeaways from the HIRI's 2018 Industry Insights Conference. If you follow the home improvement industry read along to get some insight into next years biggest home improvement trends.

1. DIYers are more likely to be Millennials

DIYers are on the rise. Out of those living in the United States about a quartermade improvements to their homes, but only 7% of that quarter worked with a professional. Due to the growing amount of resources like TV and digital devices, the population has access to several hours of do it yourself material per week. It is said by Peter Katsingris, senior vice president of insights at Nielsen, that "DIYers spend more than 60 hours per week on TV and digital devices, including computers and smartphones." An example of this is the widely known website, YouTube, which provides 252,000 home improvement videos to their viewers.

2. Over-inspiration is a key factor in home improvement regret

Out of those who had previously worked on a home improvement project this year, over a third of them wish they had spent more on their improvements. These regrets might be due to the fact they did not want to spend the money on a professional and missed the mark when they tried to execute the projects themselves. Over-inspiration is another factor of regret with these projects. Brenda Bryan, from The Regret Factor Study claims,"Regretters are more likely to have used a wide range of inspirational sources, especially television, magazines and social media." It is suggested that before a home improvement is completed, make sure the inspiration isn't solely coming from a fear of missing out (FOMO), but is instead inspired from the actual taste of the homeowner.

3. The rental housing market is on the rise

The number of those renting their homes has been increasing since 2004 with a large amount of those homes being rented in higher-end urban areas. Due to this rise of rental homes being lived in, 40% of recent additions to the rental stock charge is $1,500 or more per month, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. What this growth of rental properties means is the probability of greater demand for "portable" home improvements. Such improvement examples are non built in "built ins", hand-held massaging shower heads or freestanding wine refrigerators to name a few.

4. Remodeling activity isn't slowing down anytime soon

The Regret Factor Study also predicts that the remodeling activity of 2018 will steadily increase through 2021. The amount of new builds are becoming harder and harder to find due to the increasing prices, so homeowners are staying place and improving their existing properties. According to Mark Boud, senior vice president and chief economist at Hanley Wood/Metrostudy, remodeling is needed "With the existing house stock average 38 years old, much of the inventory is in need of updating."

5. With home wellness or the rise, the lighting industry is leading the way

One of the new developments with home improvements is the lighting that is used. Many are choosing their lighting based on whether it promotes wellness. Jie Zhao, Ph.D., senior vice president of research and development at wellness real state and technology firm Delos, is claiming that "Circadian rhythm lighting is a hot topic." Circadian rhythm lighting produces indoor illumination that is supposed to imitate natural light to help the body take in less artificial lighting throughout day and night. It is a new technology, also called tunable or human centric lighting that many millennial's are adding to their home improvement lists.
