Things to Do Prior to Moving Into Your New Home

So you've purchased your home, there are a few things you should do before moving in.

  1. Have your home evaluated by a exterminator so there are no unpleasant surprises.
  2. Gutter, roof and chimney cleanings. Don't wait for an issue to arise.
  3. Make sure your electrical us up to date, then work on replacing any fixtures that once your settled in.
  4. Have the floors professionally cleaned. This can eliminate any left behind pet dander, dust, or hair that may have been overlooked.
  5. Clean your HVAC system. Replace any filters, inspect for any issues, and determine your heating fuel type
  6. Set up all of your utilities. Not sure who to call, ask your new neighbors. Its a great way to break the ice.
  7. Inspect the house for anything needing paint. It will be much easier to tackle prior to moving your belongings in.
  8. Test the water. Purchase a kit that test for bacteria, lead, pesticides, nitrates, chlorine, hardness, and PH.
  9. If a radon test was not performed prior to purchase do it now.Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is radioactive, odorless and colorless. It is estimated to cause 20,000 lung cancer deaths a year.
  10. Install any emergency alarms, like CO2 detectors, fire extinguisher, smoke detectors, and water leak alarms.
  11. Create your emergency plan. Knowing what to do when faced with an emergency is difficult enough when in familiar surroundings. It can be even more stressful when your in a new home.
  12. Create a Home Binder for easy access to information about your appliances, warranties, evacuation plan, plat map, insurance information, contact information for municipal offices, contact information for service technicians and so much more.
