Tips to make your bathroom remodel affordable

Prioritize the upgrades, keep the same layout and do some work yourself to keep your bathroom remodel plans well within budget.

Tips to make your bathroom remodel affordable

Remodeling a bathroom can be an exciting venture for any homeowner looking to improve and update the space in their home. Although this can be a positive change and value for the bathroom and house alike, it can also be a pricey one.

On average a bathroom remodel costs can come in around $18.5 thousand. Even if one can swing this, the budget is never a firm price tag. Often costs can vary depending on the size of the bathroom and what the homeowner's vision is for the completion of the project.

Many find they start a project with a budget in mind, but they end of exceeding the amount they originally planned to spend due to unexpected challenges and higher then imagined material costs. One of the most important steps to take before starting in on demolition is doing your research on how much everything will cost and how long the project will take. This will give you a realistic idea of where your budget should be set so you don't end up disappointed due to running out money just half way through the remodel.

Prioritize improvements
There might be several aspects of your bathroom you want to improve, but will you be able to do every single one of them? Think about the most meaningful parts of the bathroom you would like to see changed in order to prioritize your must-haves. Instead of an all-or-nothing attitude try to fit in what you have the budget and time for at the moment and make those other, less essential changes later when your budget and time allows.

Don't move things
Instead of completely reroute plumbing or electric you can save money and time if you base your plans off the bathroom's original layout.Using the original layout can allow for more wiggle room when it comes what materials you would like to use. Sometimes working with what you have will benefit you and your wallet greatly, leaving more room for even further updating later.

Take smart shortcuts
There are ways to get around having to replace whole items in your bathroom. This can result in more money for the most imperative changes. One way to save even more money is by buying the materials needed yourself and then have the contractors install them for you.

Opt for affordable alternatives
Although sometimes quality trumps cost, there are ways to avoid the high cost of top brands by shopping stock items over custom pieces. For example, vinyl can be used instead of tile or granite over marble for counter tops.

Do a little DIY
Do-it-yourself can make your bathroom plans and budget go farther then expected. All you need is a little know how and the willingness to use your creative side. Many decide to hire out a whole project, but sometimes taking even one part of the project into your own hands can save a lot of money. An example of this would be painting. Although it can be time consuming to paint a bathroom yourself it can save up to $1,000 depending on the square footage of the space. Installing used fixtures or painting them instead of replacing them can be another way to save a little extra cash.
