6 Things You Can Plant in the Fall

With fall's cooler weather setting in, it is the perfect time to plant and spend time in our gardens! Keep reading to find out about 6 plants that you can plant in the fall.

Trees

Due to the warmer soil and cooler air, trees are more likely to do well when planted in the fall. Warm soil prompts quicker root growth and cooler air eliminates the need for more moisture. Some trees you can plant this fall are: maple, linden, sycamore, elm, spruce, and pine.

Bulbs

While you can't enjoy their beauty till the spring, fall is the perfect time to plant bulbs such as crocuses, tulips, and daffodils. Bulbs are best to plant when the soil is around 55º F. If possible, try to plant about 8 weeks before the first frost.

Cool-Season Vegetables

Harvest spring greens consisting of spinach, arugula, mustard greens, and leaf lettuce. Fall is also a great time to get your radishes, beets, and turnips into the ground. All of these vegetables thrive on the cooler temperatures.

Shrubs

A lot of shrubs are ideally planted in the fall as the cooler temperature allows roots to thrive and become more established. Lilacs, azaleas, rhododendrons, and forsythias are examples of shrubs that can be planted in the fall.

Grass

Plant new grass or patch up your lawn in the fall. Certain grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, bentgrass, and more, are best to plant in the fall. Be sure to cover with compost or straw after planting and be consistent with watering until temperatures drop to freezing.

Cool-Season Annuals

Plant one last pop of color with cool-season perennials such as violas, pansies, calendula, and petunias. These plants will stay colorful, even as temperatures begin to dip.
