Vacation Bound:

Protecting Your Home While You're Away

Going on vacation is exciting, but it's important not to overlook the safety and security of your home while you're away. Taking a few simple precautions before you leave can give you peace of mind and help prevent any unwelcome surprises when you return. Here are some essential steps to take before heading out on your next adventure.

Secure All Doors & Windows

Before leaving for vacation, double-check that all doors and windows are securely locked. This simple step can deter potential intruders and help keep your home safe while you're away. Consider installing deadbolts on exterior doors for added security, and make sure all windows have sturdy locks or security bars in place.

Set Timers for Lights & Electronics

To give the impression that someone is home, consider using timers for lights and electronics. Set timers to turn lights on and off at different times throughout the day, and consider leaving a radio or television on to create noise and movement inside your home. This can help deter burglars who may be scouting out vacant properties.

Adjust Your Thermostats

Adjusting your thermostat can help save energy and money while you're away. In the summer, set your air conditioning to a higher temperature to prevent your home from becoming too hot, but don't turn it off completely as this can lead to humidity issues and potential damage to your belongings. In the winter, set your heating to a lower temperature to conserve energy, but make sure it's still warm enough to prevent pipes from freezing.

Stop Mail & Other Deliveries

A buildup of mail and newspapers is a clear sign that no one is home, so be sure to stop deliveries before you leave. You can either ask a neighbor to collect your mail for you or contact your local post office and newspaper delivery service to temporarily suspend deliveries until you return.

Arrange for Lawncare

Overgrown grass and unkempt landscaping can also signal that a home is unoccupied. Arrange for lawn care services to mow your lawn and trim your hedges while you're away to maintain your home's appearance and deter potential burglars.

Secure Valuables & Important Documents

Before leaving for vacation, make sure to secure any valuables and important documents in a safe place. Consider investing in a home safe or locking file cabinet to store items like jewelry, cash, passports, and financial documents. This can help protect your belongings in the event of a break-in or natural disaster.

Inform a Trusted Friend or Neighbor

Lastly, be sure to inform a trusted neighbor or friend that you'll be away and provide them with your contact information in case of emergencies. Ask them to keep an eye on your home while you're gone, and consider giving them a spare key so they can check on the interior of your home if needed.

By taking these essential steps before leaving for vacation, you can help ensure the safety and security of your home while you're away. With proper planning and preparation, you can enjoy your time off knowing that your home is in safe and sound!
