Lighting Options to Consider for Your Kitchen Remodel

Lighting is everything when it comes to creating ambiance. Lights can also dictate the functionality of a space, so it's important to choose wisely! It can feel like there are a million choices, but everything can be broken down into categories. There are three main varieties of kitchen lighting to choose from, and each one has a range of options all of its own. If you're in the middle of a kitchen renovation or thinking about making some changes, follow along as we discuss each type of fixture!

1. Recess Lighting

Recessed lights are a great way to add ambiance while keeping the design minimal and discreet. They disappear into the ceiling and help preserve a sense of openness and space. Many people also prefer them because they seem to need less cleaning. It's important to note that recessed lighting requires enough open space above the ceiling for the housing and wiring to be installed. Ceiling joists limit the locations where they can be installed. They may be a little more difficult to install, but they are an excellent option for sleek lighting.

2. Surface Lighting

Surface lights are single, mushroom-shaped fixtures that hold single bulbs or larger rectangular fixtures that contain multiple fluorescent tubes. Because they are not flush with the ceiling like recess lights, they do require regular maintenance to avoid dust buildup. These fixtures are mounted directly onto the ceiling and are capable of illuminating a large area. They can be a harsh light, but if you opt for a dimmable version, you can control the mood!

3. Pendant Lighting

A pendant light is a fixture mounted to the ceiling that hangs down on a rod or chain. They are technically a type of surface light but usually aren't capable of illuminating a large space with a single fixture. They are a cross between ambient light and task light. Pendants bring light closer to the surface of a table, sink, kitchen island, or counter for increased visibility. This type of fixture is available in a variety of sizes, colors, and materials, so there's something for everyone.

Cabinet Lighting

There are many cabinet lighting options such as interior and under-cabinet. Adding cabinet lights is a great way to add an accent or increase the functionality of your kitchen. Under-cabinet lighting includes focused light fixtures that provide task lighting over counters, sinks, and prep areas. In-cabinet lighting is installed inside cabinets to offer better illumination when searching for dishes, pans, or other stored items.

Choosing the right lighting may seem difficult, but the good thing is that if you don't like something, you can always change it! You may even find that a combination of styles is what works best for your kitchen. Take your time and explore all of your options. If you have in-depth questions, reach out to a professional to help guide you toward the right decision!

** When working with electricity, it is always recommended that you consult a professional. In addition to causing safety and fire hazards, any electrical work done by a non-professional could have the potential to void your homeowner's insurance.
