Checklist for Spring Cleaning

Now that spring has arrived, you may be seeing certain concerns in and around your home that need to be addressed. Your baking and Christmas shopping to-do lists can no longer keep you from taking care of your home. It's time to go to work on getting your house ready for the spring season.

Spring cleaning is necessary for the health of your home, but it can be overwhelming to tackle everything at once. Fortunately, you don't have to complete all of the tasks in one weekend; instead, you can check them off as you go throughout the season.

Here are nine home renovation recommendations for spring, whether you're working on indoor or exterior projects.

1. Clean windows and screens.

Allowing more natural light into your home through freshly cleaned windows is a great way to start your spring cleaning. Dish soap, white vinegar, and water can be used to clean the exterior of your home's windows to remove filth. Before rinsing the window with water, make sure you scrub it well enough to create a pleasant lather. To keep things a little less messy, use a window cleaner spray (store-bought or homemade) for inside cleaning.

Window screens should be cleaned as follows:

Fill a spray bottle with a moderate vinegar and water solution.

Remove the screen and clean any dirt or grime using a spray bottle.

Add a little dish soap to the vinegar mixture and re-spray for more tenacious stains.

After cleaning the screen with any form of cleaner, rinse well.

Allow the screens to dry for a few hours outside before replacing them on the windows.

2. Replace your HVAC’s air filters.

Air filters should be replaced every three months at the absolute least in your house. On your spring maintenance checklist, make sure to include this step. Depending on the overall air quality of the environment surrounding your home, if you have any pets in the house, or if you have family members with allergy sensitivities, you may want to consider replacing filters more frequently.

3. Service your air conditioning unit.

It's a good idea to get your house air conditioning unit serviced in preparation for the hot months ahead. Unless you have prior experience with house A/C systems, hire a professional to complete this task. Coverage for major components of your air conditioners and heating units, electrical systems, plumbing systems, kitchen and laundry equipment, and more are included in other home warranty advantages.

Check your home's ducts and vents when your air conditioning is being serviced to ensure there are no obstructions, especially if you had work done on your home over the winter. If any obstructions are discovered, it's a good idea to have a professional HVAC service technician take care of the situation.

4. Inspect the exterior for damage.

Winter storms may wreak havoc on your home's exterior. Another springtime home maintenance advice is to check the roof, gutters, and siding. Here are some things to keep an eye out for:

Examine the roof for any missing or loose shingles.

If there are any holes in the home's exterior caused by a falling tree branch or even natural aging, have them repaired as soon as possible so that they don't cause any extra difficulties in the interior.

Examine your gutters to ensure that they are clear of debris and open, as this will prevent water from gathering and perhaps leaking into the foundation or through the roof.

If your home's siding has dirt or moss stains, clean it with mild soap.

Examine the exterior for signs of blown-off or damaged siding, as well as windows that may have shifted in their frames due to high winds.

5. Seal up doors and windows.

It's typical for uninvited creatures and pests to make their way into the comfort of your house during the winter months.

Termites are a common home invader, particularly during cold spells when they seek to exploit home heating systems. To prevent termites from entering your home during winter, make sure all screws around doors and windows are tightened.

Rubber door sweeps can be worth include on your spring home maintenance agenda. These low-cost items can be attached to the bottom of any external door that has a gap between the door and the threshold. Rubber door sweeps will not only keep troublesome insects out, but they will also help to maintain a more consistent internal temperature in your home.

6. Touch up exterior paint.

After you've made sure there's no major exterior damage, the next item on your spring home checklist is to touch up any areas that could need a fresh coat of paint. Repainting siding or trim isn't just for when you're doing a makeover. This is a simple task that you can do at any time of year, but especially after the winter storms.

Look for areas that need to be painted, such as external paneling, siding, and window and door trim. Make sure the paint you use matches the outside color of your house. If you don't have the exact paint color you want, ask your local hardware or paint store to see what they recommend for getting a close match.

7. Spruce up outdoor spaces.

To get your yard ready for spring, start by clearing up any debris that may have accumulated during the winter storms. Clean out the gutters by removing any leaves and debris. You'll also want to give any bushes or trees a fresh start by trimming them back.

It's time to start thinking about spring grass care. Remove any dead grass, reseed the area, and add a fresh layer of dirt to allow grass to grow again. To get the work done, an electric thatcher should suffice. Aerating and fertilizing your grass is a good idea.

Cleaning patios, decks, and balconies is also a component of spring house maintenance. If you want your home's outdoor living spaces to reach their full potential in the warmer months, they may require some TLC. To prepare for future outside grilling and partying, sweep and power wash each area.

8. Declutter your house and garage.

Decluttering your home and garage, as well as getting rid of items you no longer use or need, is a part of spring cleaning. (Yes, it's time to say goodbye to that 15-year-old camping tent you've never used, as well as the shipping boxes left over from every gadget in your home.)

This is a springtime home maintenance suggestion that can also aid with overall home renovation. Decluttering your interior spaces can not only refresh your home's atmosphere, but it will also improve air circulation. Remove any items that are blocking air vents, such as furniture, rugs, or appliances. If you have outdated home décor items that you don't use or have place for, now is the time to get rid of them.

Take a couple of hours to go through everything in your closets and garage. Consider donating or having a yard sale if you have any home appliances, furniture, or clothes items that haven't been used in years. Make sure everything that's left over has a home with these garage storage solutions.

9. Take care of any home repairs that were put off during the winter months.

Finally, spring is an excellent time to complete any home improvement projects that you were unable to complete during the winter.

Spring home improvement jobs can include window repair for drafty windows, electric repairs or updates to make your home more energy efficient (check out these energy-saving recommendations), or plumbing repair if any of your interior or exterior fixtures need to be updated.
