How to Organize Your Garage

Organizing your garage
With temperatures rising, spring is a perfect time to work outdoors and get your garage ready for a new season of activity. If your garage is in need of some organizing attention, open up those doors and dedicate a weekend day this spring to giving that space an organizational makeover with these suggestions.

Plan a day to dedicate to your attention to organization. When you have a plan in place it will be easier to work through the chaos.Plan to pull everything out. Designate areas for specific groups like hand tools, lawn care, patio furniture, kids toys, etc. figure out what you may need to get to store them efficiently. Get boxes for items that will be donated, trashed, or recycled.

When garage cleanup day has arrived, make sure you have enough:
  • Trash bags and cans
  • Basic cleaning supplies
  • Empty boxes for collecting items for donation
  • Plastic containers in a variety of sizes for storage
It may even be worth getting a small dumpster for bulkier trash items if it’s been a while since the last time your garage has been organized. Once you have a space clean and swept you can start pulling everything out to see where it will go if it is being kept and tossed in the donation or trash box if it’s no longer needed. As you begin to pile things, keep like items together. With similar items together, you better address what should stay in the garage and what should go.
Think vertically, Most hand tools can be hung on the walls for easy viewing and use. Pegboards, cabinets, and overhead storage are all options for getting important storage and tools off the ground.

Use your space wisely. Here in Vermont its likely you will need a spot for winter storage as well as storage for summer stuff too. Try to utilize one space that you can change seasonally to be effective in storing different items from skis and shovels to lawn chairs and grills.
