Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

  • Clean the Roof to prevent build up and rot in valleys. This is also a good time to inspect for any cracks, damages, or loose fasteners
  • Check the Exterior walls. Look for damaged areas near any water runoff areas, look for water stains that can indicate gutter leaks or damage as well as signs of damages from pests like squirrels and woodpeckers.
  • Examine Your Chimney for cracks, missing bricks, masonry or calcium deposits that can indicate water infiltration
  • Foundation. While you look at the exterior walls also pay attention to your foundation for signs of cracking. Often times foundation damage must be assessed and repaired by a foundation specialist to bond the cracks
  • Caulk the Windows. This will increase your energy efficiency . Be sure to check that any caulking or weather stripping is still intact. If you find condensation in between pains in the winter month the window should be repaired or replaced
  • Prep your AC.Change the filter, check hose connections for leaks, and make sure the drain pans are draining freely.
  • Check the Attic. Keep an eye out for any critter signs like chewing, damage or waste. Search for any signs of mold which may look like black or grey blotches. This is a good time to ensure that your attic has proper ventilation to deter mold growth in the coming warm months.
  • Investigate the Basement. Your basement should not have any signs of dampness. If it feels damp you may have the need for a dehumidifier. Check the walls and floors for cracks allowing any water penetration. Use a flashlight to closely inspect exposed framing for any signs of pests like tunneling in the wood
  • Scrub and Stain the Deck. Check the deck for any splintered boards or warping. Give it a good sweep to remove any debris left over from winter. Now is a good time to stain or seal it if needed.
